There is a lot more to handling traffic than lining CTC signals or issuing written authority. A railroad that is efficient, economical, and reliable runs from a plan. In North America, the plan is generally developed and executed by the train dispatcher.
Chapter 15 of "Elements of Train Dispatching" Volume 2 discusses planning procedures, demonstrating with single track, double track current of traffic, and two main track operation. Reading can convey the information, but practice produces the skill.
Single Track 1 is the first of a series of simulation exercises developed for practice of the methods of railroad traffic planning and execution. The simulation makes use of Train Dispatcher 3 simulation software produced by Signal Computer Consultants.

Train Dispatcher 3 is required and must be purchased separately from Signal Computer Consultants. |

This software is an accurate representation of a CTC display and control input screen and of train movement. It provides the means of turning a set of train data into a planning and execution exercise. |
|
Single Track 1 represents the Albany-Galveston example district used in "Elements of Train Dispatching" Volume 2. The example district is sixty miles and appears simple; however, the exercises are not. There are two sets of train and simulation data; moderate traffic (16 trains per day) and heavy traffic (28 trains per day). The trains are the same each day, but the pattern of traffic is different for each of the seven days of a week.
The exercises in Single Track 1 assume familiarity with the material in "Elements of Train Dispatching" Volume 1 and Volume 2.
